A slip-painted pottery Bowl
East Persia or Transoxiana, 9th/10th Century

with flaring sides, decorated in manganese-brown on a white ground with a continuous frieze of kufic inscription around the sides, a dot in the centre
23 cm. diam.

Footnotes

The inscription is: "[The free-born] is free even if he is touched by harm".

These wares, with their stark black and white aesthetic and seemingly similar inscriptions, are amongst the most sophisticated works in the Muslim world.
