with hexagonal shaft and domed base standing on three hoof feet, all with pierced palmette interlace, kufic inscriptions engraved at both ends of the shaft and around the base, tray possibly associated

Footnotes

The inscription on the shaft is a repetition of: "Sovereignty [is God's]".

This piece, one of the best examples of its type to appear at auction, would have supported an oil lamp. A similar example was formerly in the collection of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, (Toby Falk (ed.), Treasures of Islam, Geneva, 1985, no. 258).
