A Mamluk gilt and enamelled glass Beaker
Syria, second half 13th/14th Century

pale green, outsplayed mouth with rounded rim on a gently tapering body and applied base, decorated on the exterior with a large fish below the mouth, the outlines and details rendered in fine lines of red enamel on a gilt background, the top of the body with four red lines enclosing two gilded bands sandwiching one composed of small opaque light blue enamel dots and below with a further two large fish above a double red line around the bottom
13.7 cm. high; 7.7 cm. diam.
