Turkey, 19th Century

the red and green silk pile voided on a gold colour silk and metal thread ground with a palm medallion, with a floral swag border
59 x 132 cm.

Footnotes

This cushion cover or yastik was produced at Uskudar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus.

The bi-chromatic colour scheme is characteristic of this type of weaving as is the floral decoration that shows European influence. This panel is notable for its virtually pristine condition pile and undamaged metal thread ground.

For a yastik of this type in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, see Patricia L. Baker, Islamic Textiles, London, 1995, p. 153.
