An Iznik pottery Border Tile
Turkey, circa 1560

decorated in blue, turquoise, raised red and thin black outlines with a frieze of palmettes each reserved with a tulip or carnations, tulips alternating with cloud motifs above and a vine with saz leaves below
15 x 32 cm.

Similar tiles can be seen in the Mosque of Rusten Pasha in Istanbul, completed in 1561 (Tahsin Oz, Turkish Ceramics, Turkey, n.d., pl. XLI, 81).

Rustem Pasha, Grand Vizier in 1544-1553 and 1555-1561, was married to Mihrimar, daughter of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent.
