An Iznik pottery Tile
Turkey, circa 1560

decorated in cobalt-blue, green, raised red and black outlines with a design of four palmettes centred on a rosette, arabesque split leaves between
26 cm. diam.

Footnotes

Design elements on this tile which was produced in the last decade of Sultan Suleymans reign, compares with that of a mosque lamp that was made for the Suleymaniye (completed 1557). The sparse orangey-red and turquoise-green confirm this dating (Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik: The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, fig.377 and p. 224).
