Footnotes

Cintimani pattern was favoured by the Ottomans. It is thought to have either a Buddhist origin or to be based on the dots and stripes of animal skins. The design is used across the spectrum of Ottoman decorative arts.

For a discussion of cintimani design, see Gerard Paquin, Cintimani in Hali, no. 64, August 1992, pp. 104-19.
