Footnotes
This is a magnificent example of Atasoy and Raby's "Potter's Style". This short lived style was developed in the 1530's, and is characterised by its blue and turquoise colour scheme and free style decoration. There is a lingering influence of "Baba Nakkas" wares, a feature that can be seen on the back of this dish (Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik: The Pottery of Ottoman TUrkey, London, 1989, pp. 115-20). For comparating examples, see Atasoy/Raby, fig. 152 and Bernard Rackham, Islamic Pottery and Italian Maiolica, London, 1959, no. 70.
