Footnotes

Provenance:
Sir Alan Barlow Collection, and by descent.

Published:
Geza Fehervari, Islamic Pottery: A Comprehensive study based on the Barlow Collection, London, 1973, no. 203, pl. 87b;
Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik: The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, no. 500.

The strong abstract design on the dish is a good example of the innovations taking place in Iznik design at the end of the 16th Century. The concept of abstract designs was not new, but took on a new emphasis, becoming more varied and eclectic. Another dish of similar design, although with a rock and wave border, is in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon (Atasoy and Raby, 1989, no. 498).
