Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik: The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, fig. 430.

Although the cypress tree appears in Ottoman wall painting of the 15th Century, and Iznik pottery in the 1520's, it did not become popular at Iznik until the 1560's (Atasoy/Raby, p. 237).

It is extremely rare to have markings on the base of Iznik wares. A dish sold by Christie's in 1995 was painted under the foot with a bird and an harpy (Christie's, Islamic Art and Indian Miniatures, 17th October 1995, lot 313).
