This dish belongs to an extremely rare group of wares that are decorated on a coloured slip ground. They were produced for a relatively short time, from the 1560's to the 1580's. This dating is confirmed by the provenance of three of the group that can be traced back to the mosque of Selim II in Edirne.
A dish in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which is also on a lavender ground, is painted with the same design that according to Atasoy and Raby, is an imitation of the Venetian vetro a fili glass (Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik: The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, fig. 709 and p. 236.
