A rare late 18th century fourth series pocket chronometer movement of 'the second kind'

John Arnold, London, No 54/355
the full plate gilt movement signed Jno Arnold, London, Inv. et Fecit No 54/355, with pierced and engraved straight sided wedge-shaped cock terminating in a diamond endstone to a gold balance spring of four turns and a steel and brass O Z balance, over circular turned pillars, the chain fusee movement with maintaining power and Arnold type spring detent escapement, now with a later enamel Roman dial signed CHRONOMETER/JNO. ARNOLD/LONDON and contained in later silver pair cases hallmarked for London 1832, casemaker JW the backplate 40mm. diameter

Footnotes

Illustrated in Mercer: John Arnold & Son, AHS, London 1972, Plate 84. Noted by Mercer to be "In original state, gold helical spring"

The inside of the outer case is scratch marked "Dent". Bearing in mind the quality of the later enamel dial, it is reasonable to assume that this movement was taken to Dent in 1832 to be re-dialled and re-cased, in order that it would again be put into useful service.
