A Fragment of Oak taken from the Transom of HMS VICTORY

rectangular sawn section with one surface bearing traces of pitch and horsehair and with a paper label having a manuscript inscription in ink "Oak off transom starboard quarter of VICTORY cut out for repairs Oct. 1888 & is a bit of the original wood cut about 1749 (10 years seasoning) Victory was in frame 1759 and launched May 1765. This wood was in Trafalgar. Adm Hopkin (Adm Superintendant Portsmouth 1888) gave it to Adm Hickley, who gave it to me New Year 1921 H G Constable." Also includes a letter to Mr Constable dated 1924 and a letter from Admiral Hickley dated 1891 describing the acquisition of the fragment. 32 x 3.5 x 2cm.(12.5 x 1.5 x 0.75in.)
