A Model of the America's Cup Defender RANGER J5

hull of timber, plank on frame, painted white to the waterline and maroon below with a red caveta line. Laid timber deck with finely detailed hatches, winches, cleats, sheet grinder, binnacle, wheel and tender. Alloy painted spars and cotton sails with accurate running and standing rigging. On a stand. 86.5 x 14 x 119cm.(34 x 5.5 x 47in.)

Ordered by Harold Vanderbilt as a response to Sir Thomas Sopwith's challenge with ENDEAVOUR ll, RANGER, designed by Starling Burgess and Oiln Stephens at Sparkman & Stephens, was the ultimate expression of the J Class. The product of an extensive tank testing programme for the first time, RANGER defeated the challenger in four straight races to retain the America's Cup in 1937.
