The precise significance of the mating cockerel and hen motif is not known. It occurs on English delftware with anti-Jacobite subject matter, for example Leslie B. Grigsby, The Longridge Collection, D313 a punch bowl inscribed 'Confusion to the Pretender 1746'. Based on the date, the bowl celebrates the royalist victory at Culloden. The author comments 'Presumably, the copulating birds scenes had some meaning relevant to the uprising'. Another similar bowl with a portrait of the Duke of Cumberland was sold in these rooms 10 June 2003, lot 67
