Footnotes

Provenance: Robin Bulter, 30th July, 1987. This rare wine founain was probably made for Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Baronet (1794-1813) of Long Newton, County Durham, soon after he inherited the title. It would appear to be a unique survivor of its type. The glass barrel is a tour de force of the glassblower's skill, and was probably made at one of the glassworks on the Tyne, at Newcastle or South Shields, or possibly at Sunderland. The silversmith John Robertson I is recorded working in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, circa 1795
