Footnotes

Provenance: Marius Bernard Collection, Marseilles. The decoration of this piece is related to faience made by the Clerissy family in Moustiers. Fine paintings after Tempesta were painted by the Viry family and examples signed by Gaspard Viry are known. Joseph Clerissy moved from Moustiers to St Jean du Desert and also engaged the Viry family as decorators. For a Moustiers charger in the Victoria and Albert Museum with the same subject after Antonio Tempesta see Arthur Lane, French Faience, plate 36.
