Valuations & Taxation
For size and scope, Bonhams UK valuation service is without equal. Spanning the country
from Aberdeenshire to Cornwall, our valuers are renowned for their professionalism, knowledge and confidentiality, and attend to the needs of all kinds of clients from private individuals to country houses, museums, companies, and government institutions.
Clients are most welcome to make appointments to visit the London valuations department at New Bond Street for friendly, yet highly
professional assessments of their art, antiques and collectables. We regard client service as our number one priority and are perfectly placed to provide help and advice on all manner of related issues. Alternatively, our nationwide network of offices and representatives makes the process easy and swift, and our teams of valuers can call upon the resources of our specialist departments at any time.
Insurance Valuations
Over time, the value of antiques, art, and collectables can increase considerably often without the owner being aware of it. When it comes to insuring these items, it is vital that their true value is registered so that they are properly covered in the event of damage or loss.
However large or small your collection, Bonhams can offer a confidential insurance valuation service to suit your needs. Our valuation document is easily understandable and has been designed to present each item in a clear, simple and readily accessible way, augmented where necessary by full colour photographic references. One concise document provides a clearly defined record in category and location order, whilst additional information such as provenance and acquisition value can be tailored to your individual requirements. As well as a bound document, the valuation can additionally be made available as an electronic database, or alternatively be readily linked to an existing asset register. Many leading insurance brokers and underwriters offer certain discounts based on valuations produced by Bonhams. To ensure that your items are kept insured for their full amount, we can contact you at regular intervals to make the necessary reappraisals.
Bonhams has a wealth of experience in dealing with the valuation requirements of corporate and institutional clients from multinational corporations to city organisations, museums, and national and local government. Consequently we have considerable experience responding to the specific requirements of each client.
Probate/Inheritance
Tax Valuations
When valuations for probate are required, speed and accuracy are of the essence.
When a valuation for probate or inheritance tax is requested, our aim is to visit the client or property as quickly as possible, and then deliver the final document to the executors with the utmost priority. In cases where there are a number of beneficiaries, this can take the form of individual valuations for each beneficiary. Following the initial assessment, we can arrange for any small valuables to be stored securely on our premises and, if necessary, arrange a total house clearance, including the disposal of any unsaleable items. Bonhams has a considerable amount of experience in dealing with the intricacies of estate administration, which is why our first task is always to appoint a highly experienced administrator to co-ordinate the sales programme.
We supply the executors with a monthly report, which tracks the progress of items through the sale, and provides a detailed breakdown of the monies raised and the costs incurred
Tax and Heritage
Advice with works of art and antiques now becoming increasingly popular as investment assets in financial portfolios, more and more of our clients are seeking specialist advice on the tax and heritage implications.
In particular we can assist in the following ways:
- pre sale advice on possible base date values and, if required, calculations of the potential Capital Gains Tax liabilities
- post sale advice on base date values including the provision of formal valuations, where required
- negotiating values for Inheritance Tax purposes where objects are sold during the administration of an estate
- gifts of objects and advice on formal leaseback arrangements including the negotiation of user rentals
- preparing or assisting with claims for the conditional exemption, or re-exemption, of pre-eminent objects from IHT
- advice on the Estate Duty or IHT implications of selling or transferring previously exempt objects
- negotiating private treaty sales to UK public collections and the calculation of the tax exempt special price
- negotiating offers in lieu of IHT and Estate Duty together with the calculation of the tax credit
- constituting and negotiating claims for the exemption of houses of outstanding historic or architectural interest from IHT
Inspections with a view to selling
If your aim is to sell an item or collection at auction, then Bonhams will be happy to provide estimates free of charge. We will assist you on every step, from initial inspection to successful sale.
When it comes to providing valuations, flexibility is our watchword. At one end of the spectrum we are happy to value a porcelain figurine from a photograph sent in to us; at the other we have teams of specialists available to handle the largest collections and House Sales.
From our base in New Bond Street, London, our network of salerooms and offices extends across the globe. In all instances, having liaised with our specialist departments, the valuer will confirm estimates in writing, and suggest suitable sale dates, reserves, marketing strategies, and transportation requirements.
