Ramos, Banksy, Warhol and Chicago - Stand-Outs for Inaugural Contemporary Art Sale at Bonhams New York
May 13 2008
New York
Collectors and admirers of contemporary works of art are eagerly anticipating our inaugural New York sale of Contemporary Art on May 13, 2008. On offer will be outstanding works by many of today’s most highly regarded artists, including Mel Ramos, Elaine Sturtevant, Anish Kapoor, Banksy, Anton Henning, Andy Warhol and Judy Chicago.
One of the super heroes of the sale is a powerful and iconographic Mel Ramos painting from the 1960s. Coming from a private collection, The Green Lantern embodies all the optimism and visual punch of the very best of the pop movement. Beautifully and simply rendered, the figure stands on a background defined by bold sweeps of thick paint. Says Dougherty, “The Green Lantern is part of the pantheon of Pop Art. These works have been influencing younger artists for nearly 50 years.” The auction’s catalog cover lot, its crime-stopping estimate is set at $600,000-800,000.

African & Oceanic Works of Art
at Bonhams New York
May 15 2008
New York
Collectors of outstanding African and Oceanic art are awaiting our upcoming sale on May 15, 2008 in New York City following the success of the newly formed department’s inaugural sale in the Fall of 2007.
The upcoming auction is expected to entice aficionados of the genre. As Bonhams’ African and Oceanic specialist Scott Rodolitz states, “Amongst the approximately 200 lots we will be offering, the sale will feature more than 25 pieces from the Bohlen Collection of African Art. As this is one of the premiere collections of African art in the country, I’m sure the sale will attract an extremely enthusiastic group of bidders.”
One of the highlights of the Bohlen material is a rare Punu figure estimated at $100,000 to $150,000. Collected prior to 1935, the work has been within the collections of several luminaries in the field such as Jernander, de Grunne, and Guimiot.
