Fredric Backlar has been a Consultant of Bonhams African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian Art Department since he started at the company in 2009. His primary responsibilities include business getting, valuations and the day-to-day management of the department, in addition to cultivating and managing relationships with collectors, dealers and institutions.

Backlar has more than 25 years of academic and professional experience in the art field, with special expertise in appraising and selling African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian art. Backlar also has an in-depth knowledge of the overall art market, developed through years of academic research and work experience.

He has participated in the sales of many private and well-known collections internationally. Some of his professional highlights include sales of Kirk and Anne Douglas, George and Ruth Kennedy and the seminal auction of the Saul and Marsha Stanoff Collection, which brought more than $10 million for 60 lots offered.

Backlar began his auction career at an international auction house in 1991, where he rose through the ranks to become the West Coast Representative for African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian Art, in addition to being responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Los Angeles region.

Backlar's educational qualifications include earning an MBA from the University of California at Los Angeles (1996), a BA in Art History from UCLA (1989) and a diploma from the prestigious Harvard High School in Los Angeles.

Backlar has served as a board member of the Ethnic Arts Council in Los Angeles since joining the organisation in 2000.
