Jeffrey Smith, Vice President and Director of Bonhams Furniture and Decorative Arts Department in the US is based in San Francisco and has been a member of the company for nearly 17 years. He is responsible for fine furniture and decorative art sales in San Francisco in New York and Los Angeles. Further, he is member of the appraisal team responsible for fair market, insurance and estate appraisals on the West Coast.

Although his background as a student was originally in American Art History, after receiving a degree in European Art history, his interests turned toward the continent. French, Italian, Spanish, Northern European and English 18th and 19th century furniture and decorative arts are his areas of specialization. Additionally, he is versed in early works of sculpture, Latin American Colonial furniture and textiles. As a collector, he enjoys a wide range of disciplines, including American art pottery and antiquities.
Prior to his current position at Bonhams, Smith was the Vice President of auction services and was responsible for launching one of the first online auction appraisal websites and maintaining its content and network specialists.

Previously, he was Vice President of several departments at Butterfield & Butterfield including European and American furniture and decorative arts, silver, carpets and Asian works of art. He first entered the field of antiques as proprietor of Jeffrey Smith Neoclassical Antiques, which specialized in neoclassical decorative arts of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Earlier in his career, Smith was the West Coast advisor for the US Fulbright Scholarship program at the Institute of International Education, and was involved with international corporate scholarship development.

He is one of the charter members of the Decorative Arts Forum of the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and he maintains active membership in the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the World Affairs Council and the Commonwealth Club.
Smith has appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," PBS' "Antiques Roadshow®," CBS' "Early Show," and he was one of the primary hosts of HGTV's "Appraise It!." He has also been a frequent pledge break host for PBS' KQED auctions, as well as several San Francisco Bay Area talk shows. A nationally recognized expert, he has been quoted in several publications, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Industry Standard, Art & Auction, Yahoo! Finance and Forbes.

He enjoys jogging, hiking and is an avid horticulturist. He can be frequently be found exploring the villages perched along the southern coast of France.
