Virginia Salem is the Director of the Jewellery Department at Bonhams in New York. In 2005, she was appointed to the position, and has been responsible for creating and developing auctions through Bonhams prestigious Madison Avenue office.
Salem earned a Graduate Gemologist diploma in 1988. Shortly thereafter, she worked as Top Sales Associate in the Precious Jewellery Salon of Neiman Marcus in Boston, later joining E.B. Horn, Co., as a Gemologist and buyer of coloured gemstones.
In 1992, she joined a leading Boston-area auction house, where she was able to work with rare and unusual coloured gemstones and signed period pieces. In 1997, she moved to New York City, and was appointed Director of Fine Jewellery at an international auction. She directed four major jewellery auctions annually, concentrating on period and estate jewellery. In 2002, she launched Virginia Salem Fine and Period Jewellery, and worked as a private Jeweller.
Salem is a well-recognized personality and jewellery authority, having appeared as an Appraiser on PBS' "Antiques Roadshow®" for more than 12 years. She is also a member of the American Association of Appraisers, USPAP certified.
