Caroline Oliphant graduated from Bristol University in 1980 with a BA (Hons) in History of Art and Italian. She took up the post of receptionist at Bonhams in London, and in the same year joined the Watercolours Department. In 1987 Caroline was appointed Director of the Picture Department and she moved into the Old Master Paintings department in 1994. Following the merger of Bonhams & Brooks with Phillips in 2001, and the acquisition of Butterfields in America in 2002, Caroline was appointed Group Head of Pictures, responsible for overseeing the development of the department both nationally and in the US.

Caroline has been responsible for sourcing and selling some of Bonhams' most prestigious lots. Particular achievements include the discovery of a still life painting in a client's home by the 18th century Spanish artist, Luis Melendez - Still life of sea bream and oranges sold for a hammer price of £820,000. Caroline also secured the Jan Siberechts View of Henley, which was bought for a hammer price of £700,000 by the River and Rowing Museum in Henley.
