After graduating from Lincoln College, Oxford with an M.A. in English Literature, Matthew Haley worked in the University's Taylor Institution Library. An undergraduate interest in Virginia Woolf led to curiosity about the Hogarth Press, antiquarian booksellers' catalogues, and the wider world of rare books.
In 2004, he joined Bonhams in London as a specialist in the Book Department, and his baptism of fire involved one of the finest libraries of angling books to have been offered in auction for some decades. Before long Matthew began to concentrate on 19th century photography - particularly of India - and was involved in a number of photographic private treaty sales. Moving to Bonhams New York office in 2008, Matthew took the reins of their inaugural Space Sale, commemorating the 40th Anniversary of man's first steps on the Moon. He continued to handle books in all fields, manuscripts, maps, and historical photographs.
After brief sojourns in the company's Los Angeles office, Matthew returned to London in early 2013 to lead the UK Book Department.
