It has been quite a summer for the Bonhams UK Motoring team. After recovering from the record-breaking highs of June's £22 million auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the team geared up for a busy two weeks during September, hosting sales at the Beaulieu International Autojumble and the Goodwood Revival.
All three departments put on an extremely strong showing at this year's Beaulieu, selling every one of the 10 cars, 13 motorcycles and more than 230 lots of automobilia from the Exmoor Classic Car Museum Collection. The entire sale realized £2.6 million, with Toby Wilson, Sholto Gilbertson and James Knight on the rostrum to clock up a 93 per cent sale rate.
A record-breaking £13.6 million at Revival put the combined total from this year's Goodwood auctions at an incredible £35.6 million.
Sadly with the end of the summer sales came the departure of motor
car department administrator Bess Walker, who left the company to travel the world for the next 12 months. The team welcomed Cherie Silver as her replacement, a familiar face to many bidders at Bonhams sales as a key member of the customer services team.
The US team – meanwhile – enjoyed a strong Quail Lodge in August, led
by the sale of the 1997 McLaren F1, and followed that up with further
success in early October with the first ever Bonhams sale at the Simeone Foundation Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Led by the sale of a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Coupé for $357,000, the entire auction realized just under $3 million.
Meanwhile, in Europe, the team is preparing for a return to Grand Palais in Paris in early February for a sale that will offer not only motor cars, motorcycles and automobilia, but also wine and the 20th century decorative arts.
With all the excitement of the past few months one might think the team would be taking a well-earned break in the run up to Christmas but far from it – everyone is gearing up for our November sales at our New Bond Street saleroom and in Yorkshire, and our end-of-year sale at Mercedes-Benz World Brooklands in December with the aim of ending the year on a high... and only the minor distraction of planning what style of mustache to grow for "Movember" .
