It's that time of year again when Bonhams announces the call for entries for its annual, record-achieving Carmel motorcar auction, one of the longest continuous running sales of any auction house during the world-renowned Monterey Peninsula Car Week.
Held in longstanding partnership with one of the best collector car events in the world, The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, last summer's sale was a smashing success with a nearly 90% sell-through rate and numerous world auction records achieved for some extremely desirable models, including a production Bentley Blower, a Ferrari 250 Europa Coupé Vignale, and a Shelby AC Cobra, among others. In addition to the world-class offering of automobiles, the convenient, spacious and sunny venue also adds distinction to what has become one of the week's must attend events.
This year the single-day auction will be held on Friday, August 15th and, as always, will focus on bringing together the finest and most important post-War sports, GT and touring cars, barn finds, important competition cars, veteran horseless carriages and pre-War classics.
Building on the exciting success and world record-making sales at its new, state-of-the-art flagship building in London, at the Goodwood Estate in England, at the Grand Palais in Paris, and at the Westin-Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, Bonhams is poised to offer another impressive line-up at Quail Lodge in Carmel this summer.
Early consignments already include these two notable motorcars:
1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider – One of the very last examples of Ferrari's legendary limited production Daytona Spider, this superb example was delivered exactly as it appears today – in Azzurro Metallic over natural interior – and must be considered one the most original and finest preserved examples of the model. With only a short list of prominent owners since new and registering just over 3300 miles, this exceptional car maintains its original paint and interior and is in sublime condition.
1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom lll Sports 4-Seater with Coachwork by Thrupp & Maberly –
Ordered new with a first seen, custom design for His Highness the Maharaja of Bhopal, Nawab Sir Muhammad Hamidullah Khan, this is an exceptional modern and sporting design for its time. The car features extremely elegant lines, beautifully rounded door tops to give it a true roadster feel, a fully disappearing convertible top, an enclosed spare, and a neatly foldable raked windscreen. With a thoroughly documented history, this custom Rolls-Royce remained in singular ownership for over half a century before being exquisitely restored and then shown at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where it placed second in class.
Bonhams currently holds the world record auction price for any car sold at auction in addition to world auction records for Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Austin-Healey, Bentley, Frazer-Nash Invicta, Lagonda, Lotus, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce. Owners of rare, pedigree and important vehicles are encouraged to contact one of the Bonhams specialists below to discuss their motorcar as there is only a limited number of spaces available for what is one of the most anticipated international motoring auctions of the year.
