Chinese-European Art Hybrid Flowers in London

Bonhams sale of Contemporary art in London on June 27th features work by Chu Teh-Chun who exemplifies the fusion between eastern and western influences in his art.

'Abstraction neige III', 1985, estimated to sell for £180,000 to £250,000, is part of a small series of works which Chu created from the mid to late 80s featuring snow scenes. These paintings are rare and are often regarded as his most desirable pieces. They were inspired by a journey made by the artist from his Paris studio to an exhibition in Geneva. During the trip across the Alps he encountered a dramatic and beautiful snowstorm which resulted in paintings such as the one Bonhams will be offering in the June sale.

Like all of his works, this piece fuses Chu's early training in Chinese watercolor painting with the European technique of oil painting, combining typical Song Dynasty landscape style with a new sense of 20th Century abstraction. Although born and trained in China, the artist has spent most of his life in Paris, which has led to this unique and stunning hybrid style which is now collected both in Europe and in China.

The second work by Chu Teh-Chun titled 'Animations lointaines' dates from 1989. An oil on canvas it is estimated at £100,000-150,000.

These works by Chu will be on view in Hong Kong for three days – May 22 to 24.
