An atmospheric oil painting of the Butt & Oyster pub at Pin Mill by leading East Anglian artist Edward Seago sold for £39,650 on Tuesday 13th November, at Bonhams in Knightsbridge. This popular subject, painted a number of times by Seago, featured prominently amongst a wealth of East Anglian material in the annual Modern and East Anglian Picture sale. Estimated to sell for £20,000 – 30,000, bidders fought competitively for the painting, the top lot in a sale which realized a total of over £380,000 for the East Anglian pictures.
Other East Anglian highlights in the sale included 'Landscape with sheep, Dedham Vale' by Sir Alfred Munnings which sold for £21,250, 'The Flower Room, Red House' by Mary Potter for £22,500, 'The Trent Valley' by Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown for £17,500 and a pair of 'Winter snow landscapes with figures' by Thomas Smythe for £11,250.
Daniel Wright, Picture Specialist at Bury St Edmunds commented, "The undoubted success of this sale has again demonstrated that the wealth of artistic tradition which we are so fortunate to have in East Anglia, is widely appreciated and therefore keenly sought after at auction. To achieve an 80% selling rate is an achievement in itself, particularly in an often selective wider art market."
