A series of five portraits by the leading British contemporary Pop Artist Julian Opie who came to public prominence when he designed the cover for Blur's album 'Blur: The Best Of,' is to be auctioned at Bonhams print sale in New Bond Street, London on July 11.
Ruth Smoking I-V is executed in Opie's distinctive spare and deceptively simple style. The five prints show the same young woman smoking in a variety of poses. As often with Opie's depiction of women, the prints carry a subtly erotic charge.
The prints are signed by the artist and numbered 16 from a run of 50. They are estimated at £30,000-40,000.
Opie's work is in public collections all over the world including the Tate and National Portrait Galleries in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
