The Piano Department
Bonhams have been holding specialist piano sales since 1981, during which time we have sold in excess of 7,000 instruments. Each sale consists of between approximately 50 carefully selected pianos ranging from uprights to the most ornate grands. Amongst the most prominent pianos sold have been an inlaid and gilt mounted Bechstein grand owned by the Mountbatten family for £20,700 and the Steinway grand No 1225 - the first art case grand to be made by Steinway - for £56,000. Chris Rea, Dave Stewart and Jools Holland have chosen to sell their pianos through Bonhams. More recently Bonhams have sold James Blunt's
old piano on which he wrote his top selling song You're Beautiful".
Now holding 3 specialist sales a year, popular demand to hold a specialist
piano sale outside of London has seen the sales move location to our
renowned Knowle Saleroom, with easy access by road, train and local airport
As an additional service we have negotiated very competitive rates throughout the UK with our preferred carriers G&R Removals, starting from £90 for an upright piano and £125 for a grand piano.

A piece of musical history that has accompanied Tom Jones, Paul Mccartney, Eric Clapton and many more
Jools Holland OBE, the UK’s most popular pianist and bandleader, has announced that he is to sell the piano he has toured with for the last five to six years, with all proceeds going to the Drake Music Project, of which Jools is patron. It will be sold without reserve at Bonhams’ Autumn sale of Fine Pianos at 101 New Bond Street, London.
With this instrument Jools has accompanied the ‘Who’s Who’ of the music industry, including Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Muck Hucknall, Sting, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Marianne Faithfull, Jamie Cullum, Ringo Starr, Vic Reeves, Beverly Knight, Barry White, and countless others.
The Drake Music Project ( www.drakemusicproject.org ) was established in 1988 to enable disabled children and adults who are unable to play conventional musical instruments to discover their musical abilities and explore, compose and perform their own music. Jools has been a long-standing patron of the charity and is delighted to have the opportunity to raise funds by selling the piano
The piano, a Yamaha GT7, is at the cutting edge of instrumental design as it combines the touch, tone and beauty of a traditional acoustic grand piano with the modern versatility and convenience of digital music technology. Built within the body of an acoustic grand, this piano is true state of the art, and is a model favoured by the majority of touring musicians as it is easily amplified and transported, yet is rare in that few are made for the open market.
Spring 2005
This piano can be heard on literally hundreds of recordings made over the last two decades, and was used by such iconic stars as Eurasure, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and Dido, who also composed upon it. This slice of pop music history was also accompanied by a note signed by Dave Stewart:
“I have watched this Bechstein piano being played by so many Legends from Bob Dylan, Jodi Mitchell, Paul McCartney, Bryan Ferry and of course Annie who played it all the time. The Eurythmics wrote many songs in the church and this Bechstein Grand Piano was often used in the song writing process and appears on many of our albums. The Church Studios was a very active studio having so many amazing diverse artists/ bands record their music from Oasis to Dido’s last two albums before I sold it to David Gray last year as his personal studio. Since then the piano was at my home in Surrey and used on recordings with artists like Gwen Stefani and Joss Stone literally right up to the week we sold the house to move to the USA.” Read more...
