Records Tumble In Bonhams' £2-Million Motorcycle Sale
The Classic MotorCycle Show,
Stafford,
27 April 2008

Bonhams celebrated its best ever motorcycle sale at Stafford yesterday (27 April 2008), achieving several world record prices in a storming sale that realised £2,112,099. This is the highest ever sale total for any UK motorcycle sale, emphatically confirming Bonhams' position as clear market leader for collectors' motorcycles.

This was the first of four dedicated motorcycle sales at Bonhams this year, and launched the 2008 calendar in commanding fashion, with 88% of all lots selling and the top three bikes each realising over £100,000 – all three selling to UK private collectors.

The 1934 Brough Superior 996cc SS100 made top price of £166,500 – a world record price for the model and the highest price ever paid for a British motorcycle at auction. This beat the previous record of £163,600 for a 1954 AJS Porcupine also sold by Bonhams at Stafford in 2000.

The last ever Vincent Series-C Black Shadow sells for £57,600 at Bonhams' £1-million Sale
The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show
Stafford
21 October 2007

Bonhams' celebrated its second major collectors' motorcycle sale of 2007 in typically commanding fashion, selling an unrivalled 82% of the 481 lots offered for a premium-inclusive total of £974,870. Buyers and consignors from across the world were in attendance, emphasising the international nature of the collectors' motorcycle market, with many of the machines on offer finding new homes within important private collections in Italy, Spain, France and the USA.

Highlight of the sale, the 1955 Vincent Black Shadow v-twin was the final Series-C 'Shadow produced and thus of exceptional significance in the history of the Vincent motorcycle. Possessing complete, unbroken history from new and offered fresh from restoration by marque specialists, Conway Motors, this concours-standard machine sold for an above-estimate £57,600.

Unseasonal weather no obstacle to Bonhams' storming success at the Peter McManus Collection, Derbyshire, 1 July 2007

Sales of one-owner collections never fail to excite the serious motorcycle collector, and that of the Peter McManus Collection proved no exception. Bonhams' sale was held in the historic setting of the vendor's Derbyshire farm, where the fine Victorian architecture attracted almost as much attention as the Vintage and Classic-era machines on display.

Pre-sale interest had been running at an unprecedented level, with enquiries approaching Stafford numbers, and hundreds of eager enthusiasts braved the often inclement weather on viewing and sale days. Comprised almost entirely of 'barn find' restoration projects and sold entirely without reserve, the Collection of 170-plus machines realised £162,000 including premium. A limited selection of private entries was offered in addition to the McManus Collection, contributing a further £58,000 to the sale total of £220,000.
