This painting dates from 1962 and marks the artist's return to the studio after three years devoted to stage-set design for drama and opera. A concentrated burst of activity saw Tsarouchis produce 30 works in the space of a year, many of them on his signature subjects of peasant girls and sailors. Among these was Woman from Atalanti with red purse which also reflected his life-long fascination with Greek traditional local costumes. The Atalanti costume is based on the frilled, laced and pleated dress called the foustana worn by the women who lived there and which distinguished them from the women of nearby villages.
