The painting has its origins in Wendt's desire to obtain a second home and studio away from Los Angeles. This brought him to Laguna Beach, California where he had already sketched and painted. In 1916, as he was exploring the area for a suitable site, he rounded the curve on Old Coast Road and was struck by the isolation of the area and the crimson coloured setting sun just before its descent below the horizon. Old Coast Road emerged from this
experience. Wendt built his home and studio there in 1918 – almost opposite the house in the painting – trading Old Coast Road for construction materials.
