This summer, Bonhams Glasgow will stage the first ever exhibition dedicated to John Smellie (1886-1925), a celebration of the artist in his home city 90 years after his tragically early death.

Timed to coincide with the annual Glasgow Fair holiday, it will feature pictures of the much-loved resorts of Largs, Millport, Hunters Quay and Tarbert in the 1920s. Smellie's pictures are rare as he died shortly after turning professional, aged just 38, and this is a unique opportunity to see twelve of his works generously on loan from private collections.

Bonhams Head of Pictures in Scotland, Chris Brickley, said: "The name will not be familiar to most people, but if you have fond memories of holidays 'doon the watter' then you will not be disappointed. Smellie was a very talented painter, who has until now been denied wider recognition, and we look forward to welcoming you to the exhibition in July."

An exhibition catalog is available to purchase from Bonhams, 176 St Vincent St, Glasgow, tel. 0141 223 8866.

The organizers would also be keen to hear from descendants of the family, or those with further information on the artist.
