Los Angeles - Bonhams, the third largest international fine art auction house, will be the lead sponsor for the first exhibition of the internationally acclaimed artist duo, Allora & Calzadilla at the Gallery at REDCAT, Calarts' downtown center for the contemporary arts in Los Angeles.
Collaborating since 1995 and based in Puerto Rico, Jennifer Allora (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1974) and Guillermo Calzadilla (La Habana Cuba, 1971) are among the most active and socially engaged voices in the international art scene. They have had solo shows at the world's most important museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedeliijk Museum in Amsterdam, and have taken part in leading international festivals such as Documenta in Kassel, the Whitney Biennial in New York, and the biennials of Gwangju, São Paulo and Istanbul. In 2011 they represented the United States of America at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. Their works are regularly exhibited at preeminent global contemporary art fairs including Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, and Zona Maco in Mexico City.
For the REDCAT exhibition, the artists present a new performance and the 2013 video "Apotome." The performance consists of an orchestra playing a piece originally performed in 1798 in the Jardin de Plantes, Paris for Hans and Parkie, two elephants that were taken into the city as spoils of war. The concert organized by local musicians pondered if human music might elicit a reaction in non-human life forms. The second component of the exhibition, "Apotome" (2013), a 23-minute video, features the bone remains of the two elephants, currently stored in the Zooteque, a vast subterranean storage facility housing thousands of animal specimens. The video also includes a recording of Tim Storms, a singer with extraordinary vocal gifts allowing him to reach notes a remarkable eight octaves below the lowest G on a piano, so low that only animals as large as elephants are able to hear them.
Bonhams is the only international auction house which holds regular auctions in Los Angeles including the biannual Made in California: Contemporary Art auction. The company also has sales showcasing new practices in contemporary art in New York, London and Hong Kong.
Bonhams Contemporary Art Specialist, Dane Jensen comments, "We are committed to supporting contemporary art. Allora & Calzadilla represent one of the most engaging and dynamic practices in the world today, and we are honored to partner with the REDCAT, an organization which has brought timely and important shows to Los Angeles mirroring the global context for the production of new contemporary art."
