LITERATURE:
Peploe, G. SJ Peploe, Mainstream, Edinburgh, 2000, plate 80.
This classic 'roses' oil displays many of the characteristics for which Peploe became celebrated in his quest to paint the perfect still life. Meticulously planned and executed, it exemplifies the balance between natural form and design which the Colourists explored. The roses, Chinese vase, fruit and fan are all familiar motifs, but the dramatic planes of primary colour lend the whole composition a boldness and impact which is not always evident in Peploe's work.
