Entertainment Memorabilia
Bonhams regularly hold dedicated Entertainment Memorabilia
sales in both our Los Angeles and Knightsbridge, London offices. Offered
within these sales are an array items relating to the film, popular music
and television industries.
We are currently accepting entries for our June 2008 U.K and U.S.
sales, the closing date for entries for both being mid-April 2008.

The Popular Music section of the sales features posters,
records, costumes, artwork, instruments and merchandising from artists such
as; Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, The Who,
Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Grateful Dead,
Marc Bolan, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Queen, The Sex Pistols,
U2 and Nirvana. |

The Beatles remain the most sought after group for collectors. Bonhams
sales incorporate a wide range of Beatles memorabilia from Beatlemania merchandise
to autographs, personal effects to concert posters. In January 2008 a letter
written by George Harrison to his father sold for £17,400 (around $35,000).
One of the highlights of 2005 was the Private Treaty sale of John Lennon's
'Give Peace A Chance' lyrics for a substantial six figure sum. |

The Film section of the sales comprises
film posters, props, costumes, and items relating to major movie stars,
including autographs. Bonhams have sold some of the most iconic pieces in
film history, in 2005 the gingham dress worn by Judy Garland in the ‘Wizard
Of Oz’ sold for £140,000 (around $280,000), during May 2006
Charlie Chaplin’s trademark bowler hat and cane sold for $140,000
(around £75,000) and in March 2007 the cloak worn by Alec Guinness
as Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, sold for £54,000 (around $110,000).
Posters and props from cult or iconic films and items previously owned by
Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn ,Judy Garland and
James Dean are always popular with collectors.
Animation artwork is an important feature of the Entertainment memorabilia
sales. Many important collections of animation art have been auctioned in
recent years including the Estate of the acclaimed animator Carl Barks.
Illustrations by Disney, Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros. all regularly feature
in our sales. |

The Television section of the U.K sales regularly incorporate
a variety of items from across the history of television. Some of the more
highly regarded items include Spitting Image puppets, Dr. Who related memorabilia,
props and costumes, Thunderbirds and Supermarionation merchandise, items
from The Prisoner series and Star Trek memorabilia.

Past Sale Highlights
2008

One of the major highlights of the recent January 2008 Entertainment
Memorabilia sale was a collection of items relating to George Harrison including
a personal letter written by George to his father, which sold for £17,500
($35,000). Other items offered within this sale were a pair of Tony and
Cherie Blair Spitting Image puppets which sold for £12,000 ($24,000),
a rare 1964 Rolling Stones Concert poster sold for £7,800 and a rare
Sex Pistols poster which sold for £2,160 ($4,300). |
2007
During 2007 Bonhms held a wide range of Entertainment Memorabilia auctions
both in the U.S. and the U.K including extremely important collections of
both and Film and Rock & Roll memorabilia. |
The
Los Angeles Entertainment memorabilia auction held on the 9th December included
an important collection relating to the actor Tyrone Power, a painting of
Power from “Prince of Foxes” raised $39,000 (£20,000) and a portrait drawing
of the actor by his sister sold for $10,800 (£5,500). Also incorporated
within the sale were Marilyn Monroe/Norma Jeane Dougherty first contract
with 20th Century Fox detailing her name change and termination of contract
which sold for $48,000 (£24,000). A Charles Schulz drawing of Snoopy sold
for $10,800 (£5,500).
In December 2007 Bonhams London held the sale of the David Gest Collection
of Entertainment Memorabilia, the highlights of the sale being a collection
of twenty-seven signed Motown artist related contracts which sold for £5,040
($10,000) and a signed edition of Walt Disney's Nutcraker Suite which raised
£3,840 ($7,000).
The June 2007 London sale of Film and Rock & Roll Memorabilia included a
replica Wather PPK used in the James Bond film 'The Man With The Golden
Gun' which sold for £12,000 ($24,000), an original prototype Stormtrooper
Helmet as used in Star Wars which sold for £8,400 ($17,000) and a complete
Superman costume as worn by Christopher Reeve which sold for £8,400 ($17,000).
The June 2007 Los Angeles Entertainment sale included a collection of artwork
from the estate of the great Disney animator Carl Barks including a detailed
Scrooge McDuck painting entitled “Hands Off My Playthings” which sold for
$204,000 (£102,000) and a signed black and White photograph of Marilyn Monroe
sold for $14,400 (£7,000).

During May 2007 in San Francisco, Bonhams held an important sale of Grateful
Dead related memorabilia. The collection from the estate of the late “Ram
Rod” Shurtliff, included a Jerry Garcia electric guitar by Travis
Bean which sold for $300,000 (around £150,000), a Jerry Garcia electric
guitar custom-made by Doug Irwin, which sold for $186,000 (around £90,000)
and a group of original paintings by Bob Thomas created for The Grateful
Dead album jacket "Live/Dead" sold for $85,550 (around £43,000). |
| In March 2007 a remarkable collection of costumes created and supplied
by Angels The Costumiers, for some of the most famous international film
and television in history sold at Bonhams in Knightsbridge, London. Highlights
of the sale included a dinner jacket worn by Sean Connery as James Bond
which sold for £33,600 (around $68,000), a metal knights helmet worn by
Terry Jones in Monty Python and the Holy Grail which sold for £12,000 (around
$24,000) and a linen overcoat worn by Gary Oldman as Sirius Black in Harry
Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which sold for £15,600 (around $32,000).
