Specialist, Modern & Contemporary Asian Art

We currently have an opportunity for a Specialist to join the Modern & Contemporary Asian Art Department in our New Bond Street office.

Bonhams is looking for a suitable candidate to join the team at its flagship London saleroom on New Bond Street in the heart of Mayfair, contributing as a Specialist in Modern and Contemporary Asian Art. As a Specialist within the Post-War & Contemporary Art Department, you will be actively involved in sourcing Modern & Contemporary Asian Art throughout Europe, Asia and worldwide, according to the business plan.


- Establish and maintain relationships with collectors, vendors and buyers
- Raise and maintain the profile of Modern & Contemporary Auctions with colleagues and collectors regionally and internationally
- Negotiate estimate values and fees to be earned by the Company
- Coordinate with colleagues to review estimates, selections, strategy, and business decisions
- Cataloguing, authentication and conduct research for works for sale and liaise with other specialists to ensure the highest standard of expertise is maintained for all works
- Prepare sales and support your team on sale days with all aspects of the auction process
- Support the department in developing content-based initiatives to support sales
- Write articles for appropriate magazines and newspapers on Bonhams and this sale category
- Visit galleries and attend exhibitions and networking events to develop Bonhams visibility
- Supervise your team members as/when appropriate and maintain professional and internal relationships with colleagues
- Travel in the region and internationally as required to promote Bonham's visibility and maintain client relationships
- Stay abreast of and ensures adherence to relevant rules and policies applicable to the role.


- A Bachelors degree


- Sound knowledge of both the Modern and Contemporary Asian Art and Western Post-War & Contemporary Art
- Extensive network of private and trade clients with a specific emphasis on private museums
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience of working at both Western and Asian auction houses
- Proven track record of valuing and cataloguing items in Modern and Contemporary Asian Art as well as identifying items for sale at auction
- Ability to demonstrate experience of handling the movement of artworks of significant value (over £1 million) between Europe and America, to Hong Kong and mainland China
- Proficiency in using social media tools, including WeChat and Instagram


- Strong team player in an international setting, with first rate communication and organisational skills, ability to meet tight deadlines and to deal with multiple tasks at the same time
- Able to work independently and also within a team environment
- Excellent written and communication skills – fluency in English and Chinese (both written and verbal) is essential to this role
