The Dog sale 2008

Sale News

Over $800,000 changed hands on 12th February at Bonhams annual sale of dog paintings at the Madison Avenue galleries in New York.

Lovers of canine art and collectibles viewed over the weekend and many attended the charity Barkfest at Bonhams on the Sunday of the Westminster Dog Show weekend.

This joint event, co-hosted with The American Kennel Club in aid of The AKC Humane Fund, Inc., was a huge success with many attendees bringing their show dogs to the galleries.

The auction featured some outstanding results. The private collection of historical dog collars proved popular; A William IV silver collar realised $3,900 (lot 76, image1) and a Victorian leather collar embellished with silver decoration sold for $3,000. (lot 93, image 2)

Items from the Jennifer Berry Collection also fared well with collectors battling over a sewing cabinet with dog decoration which realised $9,000. (lot 34, image 3) A Victorian painted coalscuttle also proved popular selling for $7,200. (lot 37, see below)

The sale also featured over 200 paintings, watercolours and prints. Among the highlights was a delightful oil of Spaniels lazing in front of an open fire. Fierce bidding resulted in this work selling for over four times the estimate as it reached $57,000. (lot 199, image 4)

The work of John Emms always sells well and a wonderfully crafted composition of five foxhounds and a hunt terrier on a bench realised $66,000. (lot 225, see below)

A smaller example of Emms’s work, which was featured on the front cover and only measured 9 x 7 inches, made $24,000. (lot 221, image 5)

A large oil painting by James Hardy Jnr of two setters and a pointer resting by some game was also popular selling for $57,000 (lot 174, see below).
