California and Western Paintings

Bonhams organised the first-ever auction of Californian paintings in the early 1980s. Since then we have consistently led this market and brought it from a regional collecting area to a burgeoning national phenomenon.
The market for these works is exceptionally strong with high-quality examples finding their way to our salerooms three times a year. The Californian and Western Painting department offers works ranging from 19th century artists such as Thomas Hill and William Keith to American Impressionist painters such as Edgar Payne, William Wendt and Guy Rose. Additionally, Western paintings and Californian Regionalist painters are regularly featured, along with Modernist artists such as Stanton MacDonald-Wright and Agnes Pelton.
