American Paintings

Bonhams holds two sales a year in New York dedicated to American paintings. These sales feature works by artists of the Hudson River School, Impressionist, Ashcan School, the Ten, the Eight and regional schools such as the New Hope, Cincinnati and Hoosier Group. Artists such as John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Frederick Carl Frieseke, Maurice Prendergast, John Marin and Milton Avery are regularly represented.

Together with our three California and Western sales held on the West coast, the combined departments offer more sales per year in American paintings than any other major auction house. By positioning our sales on both coasts we are able place works of art in front of the most appropriate audiences. Additionally, we source our paintings from one of the widest networks of international salerooms and offices. Over the past few years Bonhams New York office has offered American paintings found in as faraway locations as Australia and sold no less than eight works by Sargent that were uncovered in the UK.
