Bonhams London Clock Department sells some of the finest timepieces in the auction world today. Just the last three sales have included examples from the great workshops of Tompion, Knibb, Fromanteel, Vulliamy, Breguet, Arnold, East, Ellicott, Quare, Windmills and many others.
2006 was a record year for horology at Bonhams, with London sales topping £3.75 million.
The two London clock sales included more Thomas Tompion clocks than any other auction house and the only George Graham clock sold by auction in London last year was consigned to our December sale. Other highlights included the most expensive clocks by, amongst others John Shelton, Daniel Quare, Joseph Windmills and the Vulliamy and Fromanteel families. Others by Joseph Knibb, Henry Hindley, John Ellicott, Stephen Rimbault, Eardley Norton, Robert Roskell, Thomas Cole, Richard Comber, Jonathan Lowndes and Richard Lyons all met with keen bidding from collectors and dealers from around the world.
Looking back on the 2006 sales results, a conclusion can be drawn that collectors are particularly keen to buy the following types of clock:
-
Bracket and longcase clocks from the ‘Golden Age’ of English clockmaking, (circa 1670-1730).
-
High quality French 18th and 19th century ormolu mantel clocks.
-
17th century European brass table clocks and pre 1700 English lantern clocks
-
Unusual 19th automata and novelty clocks.
-
Marine Chronometers and Musical clocks.
