20th Century British Art
At our recent July auction, traditional and modern works alike were snapped up by collectors. The William Smith collection of Dorothea Sharps was 100% sold, with Making Sand Castles achieving over £38,000 against an estimate of £18,000-25,000. Similarly Bradley, Spencer and Lowry all performed well. At just 11 x 8 inches, Asking for Pocket Money by the latter realised £102,000, £42,000 in excess of the low estimate.
The market for much loved Mary Fedden remains strong with all three lots selling well. Good prices were also secured for works by Pasmore, Bratby and Frink. Her Horse Study dating from 1984 (lot 29, £6,000-8,000) inspired competitive bidding, ultimately fetching over £20,000. Bonhams holds 7 of the top 10 prices for her works on paper.
These encouraging results indicate that the market is still strong for quality fresh to auction items, presented at the right level. Our next sale will take place on 18 November, closing for entry on 2 October. Please contact one of our specialists for free and confidential advice.
