Dog Sale 2009
The 27th annual sale of Dogs in art was held at Bonhams new prestigious
premises on Madison Avenue on 10th February. Several days of busy viewing
resulted in some spirited bidding on the day and a sale total of over
$830,000, which was a better result than last year.
As usual the catalogue included fine paintings by the best known dog
artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as collector's items
such as dog collars, jewellery and bronzes.
Among the highlights was a typically robust picture of hounds and a
terrier on a hunt bench by John Emms which realised $218,000. (lot 171)
A fine English painting of a liver and white Spaniel in a landscape by
James Barenger found a buyer for $45,750 (lot 132) and 'Bob' an English
Setter working, by the American sporting artist Percival Leonard Rosseau
sold for $35,000. (lot 157)
A three fold screen painted with named Bassett Hounds by Maud Earl, also
proved popular selling for $26,840. (lot 178)
Works by Arthur Wardle, Herbert Thomas Dicksee, Edmund Henry Osthaus and
Henry Frederick Lucas Lucas all sold well proving that there is continued
and strong interest in this field.
Our next sale of dogs in art will take place in February 2010.
