Lot No: 420
1948 Packard Series 22 Woody Custom 8 Station Sedan
Chassis no. G220091
Body no. 22932710

In 1948 and 1949, Packard made these Station Sedans in limited numbers. The company would not make a station wagon for another ten years. The construction of the car is extremely interesting. The body started as a standard 2201 Packard sedan. Unlike other woodies, the only place where wood is used as a stress-bearing part of the body is where the standard sedan's rear quarter is cut away and replaced with wood. The remainder of the birch is simply inlaid where the outer metal skin has been cut away, except for the tailgate, which is all wood. Unlike other wagons of the day, the Packard has only two seats and six-passenger capacity.

From its Cormorant hood ornament to the huge hinges for the rear deck, this is one impressive piece of machinery. The Station Sedan cost $1200 more than a standard one, so production was limited. Because of the deterioration of the wood, most were scrapped and only twenty some are know to have survived. A straight 8 engine moved the car's 4,000 pounds.

The subject's tan interior looks new and provides a nice contrast to the black exterior. The dash is original including the radio. The luggage compartment is lined with wood and the floor and the back of the rear seat have chrome filigreed rub strip accents. This is an excellent opportunity to obtain a seldom-seen Woody made by the prestigious Packard firm.
