Note: Roland Petersen was a painter and art professor at the University of California, Davis from 1956 to 1991. His colorful depictions of the California Central Valley synthesize formal and aesthetic concerns. Petersen was especially inspired by the light and colors he observed while attending faculty picnics at UC Davis and he created a number of picnic scenes. While the landscapes are immediately recognizable, the bold geometric backgrounds are complex exercises in color and spatial theory. His bold gestural style is clearly influenced by David Park, Elmer Bischoff and other Bay Area figurative artists. His early work is characterized by his use of thick heavy impasto.
We would like to thank Roland Petersen for providing the date of this painting.
