May Brings Strong Prices for California Works of Art at Bonhams & Butterfields

http://www.bonhams.com/madeincalifornia

Bonhams & Butterfields’ Made in California: Contemporary Art auction on May 4, 2009 did especially well, signaling that the market for works of California art is still robust. The auction brought more than $1.2-million with record auction prices for works by John Altoon, Fletcher Benton, Lawrence Carroll, and others.

The sale was simulcast from Los Angeles to San Francisco, with interest in both salesrooms. Regardless of the auction’s regional theme, telephone bidders from around the globe vied for works by California’s leading modern and contemporary artists.

According to Director Holly Sherratt, the contemporary California art market showed strong signs of life when bidding surpassed pre-sale estimates for several woks. “I spoke with several happy consignors today,” said Sherratt following the close of the sale, “ Because of the negative headlines lately, sellers had been bracing for the weak market. I was pleased to give them a bit of positive news.”

Frank Lobdell’s Summer, 1962 and John Register’s Hanalei Bay, 1989 exceeded pre-sale estimates and sold for strong prices. Summer brought $109,800 (est. $70,000 - 90,000), while Hanalei Bay also sold for $109,800 (est. $18,000 - 20,000) tying for top lot of the May 4th sale.

Bidders also competed for several works by John McLaughlin, John Altoon and Richard Diebenkorn. McLaughlin’s Untitled, 1948 sold for $45,750, Altoon’s painting from the Ocean Park Series also brought $45,750, and a work on paper by Diebenkorn sold for $33,550.

Works by Ruth Asawa, Robert Graham and Charles Arnoldi led the sculptural offerings. Among the highlights were a copper wire sculpture by Ruth Asawa from the collection of her son that sold for $51,850; a bronze female figure by Robert Graham titled Elizabeth that brought $42,700; as well as a diptych from Arnoldi’s 1987 Fossil Series that garnered $30,500, far surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $15,000-$20,000.

The next Made in California contemporary art sale will be held in November. In August, Bonhams & Butterfields will feature traditional landscape paintings and sculpture in the California and American Paintings auction. The summer auction will feature a wide variety of important Western and Hawaiian scenes, Plein Air, Society of Six, and land and cityscapes by established California and American artists.

The illustrated auction catalogs and sale highlights will be online at www.bonhams.com/us in the weeks preceding the sale and previews.
