Art collections have long been built up in corporate ownership for enjoyment, the benefit of both staff and clients and as potential investments. But in recent years many companies
have shown how such a collection can provide enormous marketing benefits
and assist team identity and pride within the company. They have also demonstrated
how developing their own art collections has led to their wider corporate involvement
in the arts, for instance as sponsors or in mounting exhibitions.
These cases have often demonstrated that a successful corporate art collection
need not have the elitist connotations that have been presumed in the past. Instead
active involvement has brought about a popularisation of their name. In the past
corporate collections often reflected the personal taste of the chairman or another
board member. Today they are as likely to have been built on the basis of, 'what's
right for our brand?'
Like private collections, corporate ones are constantly developing and often require
disposals by sale. In particular this occurs when a collection has been inherited
through a merger or acquisition and is not suitable for the new corporate identity
or requirements. Bonhams are able to offer the most competitive rates for sale
by auction and have a proven track record of success through all sectors of the
art market.
