The Silver Department
Modern Silver sales – 1945 to present day
Bonhams silver department holds two sales a year focusing on Post-War silversmiths.
These silversmiths represented a new era of dynamic design in British silver. An era dominated by the distinctive expressionism of textured surfaces.
Entries include works by our most prominent contemporary silversmiths; Gerald Benney, Stuart Devlin, Christopher Lawrence, Robert Welch, Brian Asquith, Alex Styles, Anthony Elson, Leslie Durbin, Louis Osman, Robert Edgar Stone, Rod Kelly and many more of their associates.
The sale in December presented a wide range of contemporary silver. Highlights included a pair of pepper mills, by Gerald Benney, London 1972, with his distinctive ‘bark’ effect textured surface, selling for £3,198. Also by Gerald Benney a silver and enamelled box, London 1971 selling for £3,690.
We are currently inviting consignments for the forthcoming sale to be held. Please contact the department to arrange a free valuation or for information regarding buying or selling.
Market Review
The success of these sales continues to grow. A strong area in collecting with a particular demand for commissioned works and a continuing demand for functional domestic designs as well as the novelty collectables.
In 2008 a rare ‘Embassy’ pattern canteen by David Mellor, London 1971/72 sold for £18,525. Also in this sale was a silver teapot by Angus McFadyen, Edinburgh 1999 selling for £6,792. Previous Highlights included a pair of ‘Willow and Carp’ design vases, London 1987, designed and crafted by Rod Kelly, made an impressive £17,400.
