The Silver Department
Early Spoons
Early silver spoons remain an extremely popular collecting area. Bonhams silver
department have a good working relationship with major collectors and dealers
throughout the world, who are constantly looking to acquire good examples of spoons
made in London and the provinces.
In 2007 we were delighted to offer part II of the Britton Smith collection which
included fine examples of apostles, virgin and heart, seal top and slip tops,
highlights included a rare Edward IV / Richard III provincial silver maidenhead
spoon, probably Bristol, second half of the 15th century, which reached £12,000
and a Henry VIII slip top spoon, by William Simpson, London 1515, which sold for
£11,000.
The same sale also produced one of the earliest provincial Scottish silver spoons
on record. The mid 17th century ‘notched’ puritan spoon, by Walter
Melvil, Aberdeen circa 1650, attracted great interest and fierce bidding finished
in a hammer price of £17,000.
Bonhams forthcoming Summer Fine silver sale already includes the Quernmore Collection
(Part II), which features a rare Henry VI / Edward IV Lion sejant spoon, circa
1450-1460, estimate £25,000-30,000.
If you are looking to start, or add to your Early spoon collection our dedicated
team are happy to discuss specific interests with you.
